I have always admired Mary Cassatt, an American artist in the late 1800 who studied in Paris. Her subject matter tended toward women and children - lots of family members, friends, etc. She painted without reference to photographs or special lighting. She painted from life and she still managed to catch children in relaxed and endearing poses. When a local gallery challenged artists to paint a supposed lost and found forgery after the style of a favorite artist, I was immediately drawn to try Mary Cassett. It is my composition, but an attempt at following her style. While doing so, I was gob smacked by her ability, her attention to detail, her ability to capture an ambiance. I learned a great deal. While my painting is very far from the professional level of her work, I have come to like this painting and hope that you do too.
